Numerical Simulations of Models for the GeodynamoHide

Numerical Simulations of Models for the Geodynamo

Project runtime:

2000-2004

Funding:

DFG Bu589/10-1 in the priority programme 'Geomagnetic Variations: Spatio-Temporal Structure, Processes, and Effects on System Earth'

Project description:

The understanding of convection driven dynamos in rotating spherical shells has progressed rapidly in the past decade through the use of large scale numerical simulations such that more specific models can now be considered for the elucidations of properties of the geodynamo operating in the liquid core of the Earth. It is planned to investigate the influence of lateral inhomogeneities at the core-mantle boundary on the generation of magnetic fields and to analyse the processes of execusions and reversals in a systematic manner. In the numerical simulations the use of hyperdiffusivities will be avoided since they appear to introduce unrealistic properties of the dynamo process.

Experimental investigation of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in airHide

Experimental investigation of turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in air

Project runtime:

2000-2004

Funding:

DFG Bu589/11-1 within the framework of the package proposal 'Interdisciplinary Turbulence Research'

Project description:

The experiments on turbulent convection in air conducted in Ilmenau are accompanied by data analysis and numerical simulation at the universities of Bayreuth (Prof. F. H. Busse) and Göttingen (Prof. A. Tilgner).

Analysis and extensions of the Karlsruhe dynamo experiment using new measurements and numerical simulationsHide

Analysis and extensions of the Karlsruhe dynamo experiment using new measurements and numerical simulations

Project runtime:

2001-2004

Funding:

DFG Bu 589/12-1

Projec description:

Additional measuring probes will be used to obtain further new results from the dynamo experiment running in Karlsruhe and to compare them with numerical simulations.
